Stony Brook University's swimming & diving teams picked up their first America East victory of the season, when they defeated the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon. The men's team defeated the Black Bears 174-118, while the women's team squeaked out a 151-149 thriller.
While the Seawolves received great efforts from numerous swimmers, it was two freshmen who stole the show. Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) continued her impressive freshman campaign, taking four first-place finishes for the women's team, while Ian Francis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took home four events for the men's team.
Heuser, who broke the Stony Brook school record in the 500-yard freestyle last Saturday, bettered her time today, completing the race in 5:04.55. She also finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.76), 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.90) and 400-yard freestyle relay. Joining her in the freestyle relay were Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta), sophomore Maja Gudelj (Split, Croatia) and freshman Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, Ill).
While Heuser was dominating the freestyles, Francis focused on the breaststroke, touching first in the 100-yard (1:01.29) and 200-yard (2:13.14). He was won the 200-yard IM (2:02.87) and was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first. Freshman Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), senior Michael MacDonald (Monroe Township, N.J.) and freshman Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) were also part of the winning relay team.
Also winning multiple events for the Seawolves were freshman Zachery Good (Columbus, Ind.) who won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:03.11) and 500-yard freestyle (4:52.55); Conway who also won 200-yard freestyle (1:47.45) and100-yard freestyle (48.19); MacDonald who claimed the 50-yard free (21.73); senior Julian Acevedo (Long Island City, N.Y.) who won the one and three meter diving events; Anderson in the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes; Stranc in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles; and sophomore Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia) who won the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes.
Sophomore Adrienne Policht (Mississauga, Canada) and freshman Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) also chipped in winning the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly, respectively.
Next up for the Seawolves is a home meet against Boston University next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Stony Brook will be honoring former men's coach John DeMarie prior to the meet.
