West Point, N.Y. -
Stony Brook's men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2007-08 season with a dual match at Army this afternoon where the Black Knights scored a 6-1 victory over the Seawolves. Freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) scored the point for Stony Brook, picking up a win at the # 2 singles position.
There was a pair of closely contested doubles matches, with both the No. 1 and No. 2 contests both decided by scores of 9-8. The Stony Brook duo of junior Yousseff Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and freshman Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) picked up the win at the No. 1 position, but an Army team of Jordan Girdley and Tripp Johnson was able to squeak by Baradach and sophomore Alex Markovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) by the same score at No. 2. The doubles point went to Black Knights on the strength of an 8-4 win in the No. 3 match.
Baradach picked up his win in singles play in straight sets, taking a 6-3, 7-6 (8) victory over Sean Harris at the No. 2 position. Another close match came at No. 1 singles where Rummel won the first set only to see Army's Eddie Kang come back to take a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 win. The rest of the singles matches were all decided in straight sets, all in Army's favor as the Black Knights went on to take the win.
Stony Brook will finish its stay at West Point tomorrow when it takes on Connecticut at Noon.
