Stony Brook Tennis Sweeps America East Weekly Honors

Cambridge, Mass. - It was a sweep for the Stony Brook tennis team's today when the America East Conference announced its weekly tennis award winners. Senior Sandy Wijeratne (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) were named their sports Performer of the Week for their play last week during the team's spring break trip to Florida.

Baradach was solid on the trip, winning all three of his singles matches. He picked up all of his victories at the No. 1 position to move his season record to 14-4. After dropping the first set in his first match on the trip against #59 Stetson, he came back to take a 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 win. He then won his matches against Florida Gulf Coast and New Jersey Tech in straight sets. He also scored one win in three tries in doubles play.

Wijeratne also had a solid spring break trip for Stony Brook, winning two singles matches and leading in a third that was not completed. Her first win was a 6-0, 6-2 win against Drake before she held off a comeback attempt by her opponent from Florida Gulf Coast, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. She also teamed with sophomore Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) to pick up a pair of wins in doubles play against Drake and Florida Gulf Coast. She now leads Stony Brook in singles wins this season with 13.
