Stony Brook Tennis Teams Roll Past Quinnipiac

April 15, 2008

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Both the men's and women's tennis teams made it look easy today as Stony Brook stepped outside of conference play and scored a pair of wins over Quinnipiac. Neither team lost a match during the afternoon's action, with the men winning by a 7-0 scored and the women taking a 6-1 decision after defaulting one match. Sophomore Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) dropped just two games in her win at No.1 singles, while sophomore Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) lost just one in his singles win at No. 3 for the men.

On the men's side Stony Brook swept through the doubles matches to take the first point of the day. Shvartz and junior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) won 8-4 at No. 2 while freshman Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) teamed to win a similar 8-4 decision at No. 3 to clinch the point.

Shvartz got things going in singles play for Stony Brook (7-6), taking a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Sean Pease. Three other Seawolves won their matches straight sets as SBU put the outcome of the match in its column quickly. Rummel defeated Brian Mikkelson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Fassi-Fehri downed Scott Salway 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4; and Epstein took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tom Curran at No. 5 to give Stony Brook the points needed to win the match. Freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) also took a straight sets win, a 7-6, 6-3 decision at No. 1. The only exception came at No. 6 where sophomore Alex Markovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came back after falling in his first set to take a 4-6, 6-0, 10-2 win to complete the sweep.

Similar to the men's match, the Stony Brook women also swept the doubles matches to gain the early advantage. At No. 1 Rodolfi and Sandy Wijeratne (Melbourne, Australia) had no trouble in their 8-0 win, while senior Victoria Vovsha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and freshman Fanny Charliquart (Gueugnon, France) won their eighth straight doubles match at No. 3, 8-2, to clinch the point.

Stony Brook (6-7) then continued its strong play in singles where it won four of the five matches played in straight sets. Rodolfi won at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Adrienne Markison, with Wijeratne also having an easy time in her 6-2, 6-0 win over Lisanne Steinert. Vovsha gave the Seawolves another point with her victory at No. 6, a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kasey Rosenberger. Sophomore Claudia Sanua (Bryanstron, South Africa) also won in straight sets for Stony Brook, netting a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 2 match. Charliquart completed the scoring for the Seawolves with a three-set, 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 win in her match at No. 4.

Both teams will wind up the regular season on Saturday when they move back to America East play as they host Hartford beginning at Noon.
