Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Junior James Palumbo (Carmel, N.Y.) scored the game's only goal to lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Columbia on Friday night in a rainy, LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves are 2-3-1 on the season while Columbia remains winless at 0-2-1.
In the 52nd minute, following a throw-in, freshman Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, N.J.) slipped a pass to Palumbo, who dribbled in and scored through the legs of Columbia keeper Alex Aurrichio. The goal by Palumbo was the first of his career.
Senior keeper Dawid Ditrich (Gdansk, Poland), who recorded his first shutout of the season, preserved the shutout with a sparkling save in the first half. Francois Anderson's shot from 30 yards was saved by Ditrich off the post and then into his arms.
A header from Columbia's Ronnie Shaban was saved by Ditrich late in the second half as the Seawolves recorded their second win of the season.
Stony Brook travels to face Yale on Wednesday, September 17. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm.
