Box Score

Queens, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's volleyball team lost, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-14), to St. John's on Tuesday night. The Seawolves were led by sophomore Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) who recorded eight kills with a .467 attack percentage. With the loss Stony Brook drops to 6-9 on the season while St. John's improves to 9-6.

The Red Storm opened the first set on an 8-1 run, capitalizing on some early-game nerves and five errors by Stony Brook, forcing the Seawolves into a timeout. St. John's continued to control the set throughout most of the frame, before Stony Brook rattled off five straight points to pull within 19-12. That was as close as the Seawolves would get, however, as the Red Storm closed the set out on a 6-1 run.

Set two was a back-and-forth battle at the start before St. John's used an 11-4 run to open up a 13-8 lead. Following a Stony Brook timeout, the Seawolves responded with a 7-3 run of their own, capped by a service ace from senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey), to pull within one. St. John's attack combo of Valeria Kovaleva (4k), Darlene Ramdin (3k) and Chen Chen (3k) proved too much as the Red Storm eventually pulled away with a 25-18 set two victory.

Things got no better for the Seawolves in the third set. After falling behind briefly at 3-2, the Red Storm received another four kills from Kovaleva and four from Casie Brooks as they cruised to a 25-14 win.

The Seawolves will be hosting the Stony Brook Invitational this weekend, with Xavier, Brown and St. Francis all competing. Stony Brook's first game will be Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Xavier.
