Stony Brook University's swimming and diving teams opened the 2009-10 season in a quad meet at Army on Friday evening. The men's team fell to Army, 193-86, and were topped by Boston College, 203-85. The women's squad lost to Vermont, 183-117, were defeated by Boston College, 181-119, and edged by Army, 153-147. The Seawolves did finish first in eight events including the women's 400-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Julie Policht (Mississauga, Ontario) took first in 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.96, edging Avery Pittman of Vermont by just two-hundredths of a second. Junior Maja Gudelj (Split, Croatia) won the 100-yard freestyle, touching first in 46.27, more than seven seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Senior Maeve Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and freshman Jane Kim (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) won the next two events for Stony Brook as Leong touched first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:13.89) and Kim finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.78).
The relay squad of senior Tracey Klicpera (Farmingdale, N.Y.), freshman Makenna Barley (Durham, Maine), sophomore Kaitlyn Colella (Commack, N.Y.) and senior Shelby Mirabelli (Wellington, Fla.) took the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay by more than 37 seconds.
On the men's side, freshman Ivan Kopas (Kikinda, Serbia) took home two first-place finishes, swimming a 51.79 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 1:53.64 in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) also earned first-place honors, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.78). In all, the men's team had 11 top-five finishes including a second-place finish from sophomore Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) in the 100-yard freestyle (47.57) and third-place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.78).
The women's team will be back in action on October 24 in a diving only meet at Fairfield with the Stags and Iona. The men's squad travels to Massachusetts to face the Minutemen on October 31.
