Swimming & Diving Impressive In Sweep Over Maine

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook's swimming & diving teams picked up their first wins of the season, as the men's team defeated Maine, 151-101, and the women's team topped the Black Bears, 164-131. Freshman Ivan Kopas (Kikinda, Serbia) picked up two wins, including a University Pool record in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) also won two events for the Seawolves. On the women's side, freshmen Julie Policht (Toronto, Ontario) and Renee Rosenkranz (Dover Plains, N.Y.) each won two events on Saturday.

Both squads picked up key points early as they finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay. The women's squad went on to pick up first-place points in six of the next seven events. Rosenkranz won the 50-yard freestyle, touching first in 25.01. After sophomore Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, Ochmanski followed that up with an easy win in the same event, finishing in 1:44.69.

Kopas broke the nine-year-old pool record (51.36) in the 100-yard backstroke by 15-hundredths of a second. The next five events were won by Stony Brook, including a top-three finish from sophomore Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.), freshman David White (Flemington, N.J.) and junior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) in the 50-yard freestyle. The trio of Rosenkranz, senior captain Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta) and Heuser finished one, two and three in the 100-yard freestyle.

Winning both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly, Policht won two events for the second straight meet.

Also picking up individual victory on the men's side were sophomore Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), sophomore Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) and McCort.

On the women's side, freshman Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia) and junior Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia) swam to victories.

Sophomore Shanna Murphy (Chester, N.Y.) finished second in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive, respectively.

Both squads are back in action on Wednesday, November 11, when they travel to face Fordham at 5 pm.
