Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season at Yale

Feb. 9, 2009

New Haven, Conn. -

Stony Brook University men’s tennis team swung into action for the first time in 2009 when it took part in the Yale 4-Way event over the weekend. The Seawolves picked up their first victory of the season against Georgetown, taking a 5-2 victory, but dropped their other two matches to South Carolina Upstate and host Yale. Sophomore Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) picked up a win at No. 1 singles to help SBU to its win over Georgetown.

Stony Brook open the weekend with Georgetown on Saturday, picking up an early 1-0 lead over the Hoyas when the No. 3 doubles team of junior Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) and freshman Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) held off their counterparts for an 8-6 victory that gave SBU the doubles point.

Rummel and Wong each picked up straight sets wins in their singles matches, with Rummel taking a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ned Samuelson and Wong coming out on top 6-2, 7-6 over Mieszko Tomczyk at No. 6 singles to put the Seawolves within a point of taking the match. Senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Moroco) and junior Halvar Dil (Amersfoort, Netherlands) then secured the win for Stony Brook with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles respectively. Fassi-Fehri came back after dropping his first set to win 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 while Dil walked away with a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-0 triumph.

Things did not go Stony Brook’s way in the afternoon against South Carolina Upstate however, dropping all six singles contests that resulted in a 6-0 loss to the Spartans. Dil moved up to No. 2 in the match and won his first set before falling in a close 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) loss to Edgar Rodriguez. Fassi-Fehri and freshman Bertrand Marcos (Paris, France) also won their first sets before seeing their opponents come back to take the wins.

It was much the same story for the Seawolves on Sunday, with Yale taking a 7-0 win in which it did not surrender a set in any of the singles matches. Wong came close to putting a point on the board against the Bulldogs at No. 6 singles, falling to Tom Santoro by a 7-6, 7-6 score.

Stony Brook will not play again until February 20 when it plays at Army in a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
