Bethlehem, Pa. -
Stony Brook’s men’s tennis team completed a two-match weekend sweep this morning when the Seawolves dominated Niagara by a 7-0 score. Senior Juan Carlos Cotto (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) did not drop a game in his singles win to help the Seawolves to the victory.
Stony Brook (8-3) had little trouble in the doubles portion of the match. Senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and freshman Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) set the tone for the day when they blanked their opponents for an 8-0 win at No. 3. The Seawolves also won the other two doubles matches to complete the sweep of the first point.
Stony Brook rolled on in singles play where none of the matches went to three sets. Junior Halvar Dil (Amersfoort, Netherlands) picked up the first singles point when his opponent retired after the first set. Playing at No. 6, Cotto dropped John Baird, 6-0, 6-0, setting the stage for straight sets wins in the remaining singles matches. The closest that Niagara would get to a point was at No. 3 where Fassi-Fehri fought off Joe Heckley for a 7-5, 7-5 win.
Stony Brook will be off until Friday, March 27 when the Seawolves will entertain St. John’s at 3:00 p.m.
