Stony Brook, N.Y. -
It was a close one at University Courts this afternoon as Stony Brook and Binghamton battled in an America East men’s tennis match. When the smoke had cleared it was the Seawolves who came out on top, winning their sixth straight match, 4-3, over the Bearcats. Freshman Bertrand Marcos (Paris, France), the reigning America East Performer of the Week, clinched the match for Stony Brook with a three-set victory in his No. 5 singles match.
Stony Brook (14-4) and Binghamton (12-7) started the day off by trading wins in the first two doubles matches decided. The Seawolves won the first match, getting an 8-2 win by the No. 2 team of juniors Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) and Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel), while the Bearcats picked up an 8-4 decision at No. 1. It was a close one in the deciding match at No. 3, and the Stony Brook team of senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and freshman Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) got the job done, taking a 9-7 thriller to put the first point on the SBU side of the ledger.
Stony Brook increased its lead to 2-0 when sophomore Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) scored a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Arnav Jain. Binghamton bounced back, however, getting straight sets wins at Nos. 3 and 4 to tie things up. The two squads then split the next two matches, with the Bearcats taking the No. 1 singles contest, while Wong took a 6-3, 7-5 win over Evan Algier to keep the match even. It came down to the No. 5 match which featured Marcos against Rafael Rodrigues. Marcos took the first set only to see his opponent come back to take a 6-1 win in the second. With the final result resting on the final set of their match, Marcos bounced back and took the final set, 6-2, to give the Seawolves the victory and keep their win streak alive.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action tomorrow in more America East tennis action when Stony Brook will host Hartford starting at Noon. It will be Senior Day on University Courts, with Stony Brook’s three seniors, Juan Carolos Cotto (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico), Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Fassi-Fehri being honored prior to the match.
