Softball Cushions First-Place Lead With Win Over Boston

April 19, 2009

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - Junior Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) allowed just two hits and one run in a complete game win over Boston University on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves spoiled senior day for the Terriers with a 6-1 victory, giving SBU two wins in the important weekend series. Stony Brook now sits at 30-9 (11-3 America East) while Boston University drops to 30-15 (8-5 America East).

After issuing just one walk in 12 innings of work yesterday, Boston's Cassidi Hardy struggled with her command on Sunday allowing eight free passes. Stony Brook took advantage of four of those walks in the first inning to plate two runs. Junior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led things off with a single to left center before Hardy walked four of the next five batters to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) started off a three-run sixth inning for Stony Brook by drawing a pinch-hit walk with the bases loaded. Back-to-back singles by seniors Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) and Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) pushed two more runs across, increasing the Seawolves lead to 6-0.

Jacobs, who was almost untouchable in the circle, retired 15-straight batters at one point, keeping the Terriers off the base paths between the second and sixth innings. BU's lone run was unearned and came in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Stony Brook will face Hartford on Wednesday in America East Conference action. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
