New Haven, Conn. -
After moving through its America East Schedule without a loss to earn the No. 1 seed at the conference championships this weekend, the Stony Brook men’s tennis team saw its hopes of a conference title come to an end this morning when Binghamton took a 4-1 decision to win the America East title. The loss broke a nine-match winning streak for Stony Brook, which finishes its season with a 17-5 record.
Stony Brook, which had won the doubles point against Binghamton when the two met a little more than a week ago, did not have the same luck today. Binghamton came out on top in the first two doubles flights by the same 8-3 score to win the point. Stony Brook’s No. 3 doubles squad of senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and freshman Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) were tied in their match, but did not finish due to the point having been already decided.
In singles Binghamton scored straight sets victories at No. 1 and No. 4 to open up a 3-0 advantage. Wong put what would be the only point of the day on the board for the Seawolves, scoring a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Rafael Rodrigues at No. 6. In the match at No. 3 junior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) mounted a comeback in the second set after dropping the first against Gilbert Wong. In the end, however, it came up just short as Wong pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win that clinched the championship for the Bearcats.
