Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) and senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) combined for 25 kills but the Albany Great Danes hit .308 on its to way a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. Stony Brook falls to 7-13 overall and 2-2 in the America East while Albany improves to 14-5 and 4-0.
Nelson tallied 13 kills, the 10th time in the last 11 matches she has reached double-figures. Headen registered 12 kills while senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had a game-high 15 digs. Casey Wright led Albany with 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.
Albany jumped to an early lead in set one, taking a 9-4 advantage. Stony Brook got to within 14-9 on an Albany attack error but the Great Danes scored four of the next five points to take an 18-10 led and force a Stony Brook timeout. The Seawolves got no closer than seven the rest of the way as Albany took a 1-0 lead.
The Great Danes again jumped to an early lead in the second set, going in front 12-6. Stony Brook rallied back though, making it 19-16 on a kill from Nelson. But Wright answered with a kill and then combined a block with Abbey Wexel to put Albany back in front by five. Teresa Coppiellie closed the set out a few points later with her fifth kill of the set.
Stony Brook trailed 14-10 in the early going of the third set but rallied to go in front, 17-16, on an Albany set error. The Great Danes scored two straight points, before a kill from freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) tied it at 18.
Albany responded with a kill from Gabby Whitworth though to take the lead for good. SBU still trailed by just two, 23-21, following a Nelson kill but back-to-back kills from Wright closed out the set and the match.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, hosting Binghamton at Pritchard Gymnasium. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
