Final Stats

Albany, N.Y. - Senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) each tallied 15 kills but Teresa Coppiellie registered a game-high 18 kills to lead Albany to a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-12, 25-22) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at University Gym in the regular season finale for both teams.

Stony Brook finishes the regular season 11-17 overall and 6-6 in the America East. The Seawolves will be the No. 4 seed in the 2010 America East tournament and will take on the host and top seed, Albany, on Friday in the semifinal round.

Slaughter finished the match with a. 520 hitting percentage, while Headen hit .333. Senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had a game-high 20 digs and junior Alicia Nelson (Apple, Valley, Minn.) just missed a double-double (14 kills, nine digs).

The Seawolves jumped to an 18-12 lead in set one but the Great Danes rallied to take a 23-22 lead on a kill from Coppiellie. Stony Brook tied at 24 on a kill from Slaughter but Dunja Prgomet answered with a kill before the Great Danes closed the set out on a SBU attack error.

Stony Brook bounced back in the second set though, once again grabbing an 18-12 lead. Albany closed within three on five occasions but was unable to get any closer and Stony Brook eventually took the set on a block from Slaughter and freshman Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.).

Albany dominated the third set, scoring nine of the first 11 points before eventually taking an 18-6 lead on a Gabby Whitworth kill. Stony Brook got no closer than nine the rest of the way as Albany took a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set featured 13 ties and six lead changes with SBU taking a 19-18 lead on a Headen service ace. But, with the score tied at 21, the Great Danes got a kill from Casey Wright to take the lead for good. SBU closed within 23-22 on a Slaughter kill but another Wright kill and a block solo from Coppiellie clinched the set and the match for the Great Danes.

Junior setter Kelsey Sullivan (Alexandria, Va.) tallied a season-high 50 assists for the Seawolves, who hit .400 in the opening set.
