Swimming and Diving Teams Earn Split in Maine

Orono, Maine – The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams battled Maine in a dual meet on Saturday and came away victorious on the women’s side by a score of 184-116, despite falling on the men’s side by a 160-134 count. Freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba) led the women’s squad with three individual victories, while junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) paced the men’s team with two wins.

Deschenes battled to a victory in the 1000 freestyle with a mark of 10:46.92, before earning wins in the 200 butterfly (2:11.31) and 200 backstroke (2:08.48). Freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) and junior Darcy Heuser also reeled in a pair of victories on the day. Zelnick captured first place in the 200 free (1:56.72) and the 500 free (5:14.88), while Heuser swam to wins in the 50 free (25.08) and the 100 free (54.31). Junior Taylor Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) was also a winner in the 200 IM (2:14.63) and the 200 breaststroke (2:26.08).

On the men’s side, Conway took first in the 50 free (21.80) and 100 free (48.02). Junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.13), as did senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) in the 200 butterfly (2:00.10) and junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) in the 200 backstroke (2:01.63).

In relay action, the quartet of sophomore Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama), freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia), junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) and Zelnick took first in the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.61. The men’s 200 medley team also reigned victorious behind the performances of sophomore Daniel Wenzel (Norwich, N.Y.), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), freshman Derek Woodhead (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Conway. The quartet of Deschenes, Zelnick, Heuser and junior Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, Ill.) helped the Seawolves to a first-place finish in the 400 free relay, while the men’s team of Conway, senior Chris Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.), Woodhead and junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.) won the 400 men’s event.

Junior Shanna Murphy (Chester, N.Y.) placed second in both the three-meter and one-meter diving competitions to lead the women’s squad.

The Seawolves will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 12 when they host Boston University at 4 p.m.
