Swimming and diving competes in ECAC Open

East Meadow, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams took to the pool on Friday in day one of the ECAC Open Championships. Both 200 medley relay teams fared well as the women's quartet reeled in a second-place finish, while the men took fifth.

The women's relay squad, composed of freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba), freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia), junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) and freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) posted a time of 1:47.28 to place second out of 18 teams.

The men's 200 relay team of junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) and junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) also fared well, placing fifth out of 22 teams in 1:38.28.

Two Seawolves also competed in the 1,650 freestyle as senior Nathan Fleshman (Monroe, Mich.) touched 11th (17:18.83) and junior Zackery Good (Columbus, Ind.) took 18th (17:53.12).

Stony Brook put forth a strong effort in the one-meter diving competition as well, as freshman Serra Czapla (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded a score of 329.50, a program best. Czapla placed fourth, while junior Shanna Murphy (Chester, N.Y.) took fifth (318.20), senior Megan Furrer (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) placed sixth (296.35) and freshman Liza Alekseyeva (Staten Island, N.Y.) took eighth (226.35).

The swimming and diving teams will resume action in the ECAC Open Championship on Saturday and Sunday.
