Men's swimming and diving takes fourth at ECAC Open

East Meadow, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the weekend with a first-place finish out of 13 teams at the ECAC Open Championship on Sunday. The men's squad also turned in a solid effort, finishing fourth out of 15 teams.

The women's squad edged the Stevens Institute of Technology by half a point, registering 1,592.50 points to Stevens' 1,592. Stevens prevailed on the men's side with a score of 2,003.50, while Stony Brook recorded 727 to take fourth.

Junior Taylor Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) finished as the second-highest scoring female athlete on the weekend as she tallied 113 total points. Crosby took second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 400 IM on Saturday, before capping off the weekend with a first-place finish in the 200 IM on Sunday. Her time of 2:10.10 broke an ECAC Open record for the 200 IM. Crosby was joined by two teammates in the top-10 as senior Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia) placed sixth and freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia) took 10th.

The Seawolves competed valiantly in the 50 free on Sunday as the women placed three in the top-10. Freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) touched third in 24.32, while sophomore MaryKate Morcerf (Babylon, N.Y.) placed seventh (25.08) and junior Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, Ill.) took 10th (25.28). On the men's side, junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) glided to a fourth-place finish (21.35) and senior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) battled to place 10th (21.76).

In the 500 free, junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) touched third in 5:09.59 to pace three Seawolves in the top-15. Heuser also swam the fourth leg of the 400 free relay as the quartet placed second. The men's 400 free relay team also fared well as the quartet of Conway, Ochmanski, senior Christopher Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.) and junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.) took first with an ECAC Open record time of 3:05.84.

The 400 medley relay also saw Stony Brook put forth strong efforts on both sides. The women's quartet of freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Reid, Zelnick and senior Adrienne Policht (Toronto, Ontario) took second in 3:57.63. The men's team of junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) and Ochmanski finished in 3:41.72 to place fifth.

The swimming and diving teams will be off until January 19 when they host Lafayette at 3 p.m.
