West Point, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's men's tennis team continued its hot start on Saturday with dominating wins over Army and Connecticut. The Seawolves defeated Army, 6-1, in its morning match before sweeping Connecticut, 7-0, in its night match. Stony Brook's record now stands at a perfect 5-0.
Army took the early lead against the Seawolves, winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. But SBU dominated singles play, winning all six matches while dropping just one set.
Freshman Roope Kailaheimo Helsinki, Finland), senior Halvar Dil (Amersfort, Netherlands), senior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.), senior Illan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) and sophomore Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) each won in straight sets at the No. 2-6 spots, respectively. Junior Ivan Rummel (Budaprest, Hungary) dropped the first set at the No. 1 position, but then rallied to victory by winning the final two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The Seawolves carried that momentum to the night match, defeating Connecticut without losing a set. Dil and Wong won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and Rummel and Kailaheimo followed that up by winning 8-0 at the No. 2 spot. Shvartz and freshman Palash Tiwari coasted to a win at the No. 3 spot, 8-3.
SBU then breezed to straight set wins at all six singles spots highlighted by Rummel's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1. Kailaheimo, Dil, Epstein, Tiwari and sophomore Max Sztabholz (Paris, France) earned the wins at the No. 2-6 positions.
