Men's And Women's Tennis Defeat New Jersey Tech

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's men's and women's tennis teams each defeated the New Jersey Tech Highlanders on Sunday afternoon at University Courts. The women won their fifth straight match, 7-0, while the men won their sixth in a row, 5-2. The men are now 13-4 while the women improve to 14-3.

The women started the match out by easily earning the doubles point. Senior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) and sophomore Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) lost 8-7 (5) at No. 1 but sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) and junior Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) coasted to an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Sophomore Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) and sophomore Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) then won 8-0 at No. 3 to clinch the first point of the match.

SBU cruised through the singles matches, winning each in straight sets. Freshman Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia) won 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot while Pieschl won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Rodolfi coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 while Appineni won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Freshman Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, N.Y.) dropped just one game at No. 5 and junior Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) did not lose a game in defeating Katie DeRosa at No. 6.

The men also opened their match by taking the doubles point. Junior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Max Sxtabholz (Paris, France) won 9-7 at No. 3 while sophomore Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Palash Tiwari won 8-4 at No. 2. Senior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) and senior Halvar Dil (Amersfort, Netherlands) lost at No. 1, 8-5.

Rummel lost at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 but the Seawolves then rebounded to win at No. 2 and No. 3. Epstein won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 while Dil won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Diego Abreu then defeated Wong at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4 to pull the Highlanders to within one, 3-2.

But senior Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Isreal) rallied for a three-set victory at No. 5 to clinch the victory for the Seawolves. Shvartz lost the first set, 6-4, but won the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Tiwari also won after dropping the first set as he defeated Dimitri Athans, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6.

The men and women each return to action on Monday, hosting Hofstra. The Seawolves four seniors -Rodolfi, Epstein, Shvartz and Dil- will be honored prior to the 2 p.m. start.
