Stony Brook University's men's tennis team dropped its final non-conference match of the season to St. John's, 5-2, on Monday afternoon.The loss snaps an eight-match winning streak for the Seawolves, who are now 13-5 overall.
The Seawolves nearly earned the doubles points as seniors Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) and Halvar Dil (Amersfort, Netherlands) won at No. 1, 8-7. But freshman Palash Tiwari (Delhi, India) and Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) lost 8-4 at No. 2 and junior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Max Sxtabholz (Paris, France) then fell 8-6 at No. 3.
Rummel and Epstein then each lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, but Dil won a three-setter at No. 3 for Stony Brook's first point of the match. St. John's then clinched the match at No. 4 as Mike Lampa defeated Wong, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Tiwari earned the Seawolves other point at No. 6 singles, winning 10-3 in a super-tiebreaker. Senior Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Isreal) lost in straight sets at No. 5.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on Binghamton.
