Final Stats

Queens, N.Y. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) and senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) combined for 15 kills but the St. John's Red Storm hit .300 on its way to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Carnesecca Arena. Stony Brook falls to 0-4 with the loss while St. John's improves to 4-1.

Nelson totaled eight kills and six digs as she led the Seawolves in kills for the fourth straight time to open the season. Headen registered seven kills and hit .455. Sophomore Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) tallied 17 assists.

St. John's jumped to a 12-5 lead in set one before Stony Brook scored three straight points to close within four. The Seawolves closed within 15-12 on a bad set from Diana Banya but the Red Storm scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-15 advantage.

Nelson ended the run with a kill but Anzelika Lukjanska answered with a kill of her own and St. John's went on to the eight-point set one victory. The Red Storm hit .444 in the opening set.

The Red Storm jumped to another early lead in set two, taking a 10-5 lead on a Lukjanska kill. Stony Brook cut the lead to two on a St. John's service error but the Red Storm eventually pushed their lead back to six at 20-14.

Stony Brook pulled within 23-19 on a service ace from freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) and a kill from Nelson. But St. John's scored the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.

The Seawolves trailed 9-7 early in set three following a Perry kill before the Red Storm went on a 11-4 spurt to take a 20-11 lead. Stony Brook again rallied though, cutting the St. John's lead to 23-19 on a Lukjanska attack error.

The Red Storm had an answer though as Lukjanska and Kun Song tallied back-to-back kills to close out the set and the match. Lukjanska totaled a team-high 10 kills for St. John's, who hit just .258 in each of the final two sets.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, beginning play in the Yale Invitational with a match-up against the host Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
