Volleyball Battles But Falls To American, 3-0

Washington, D.C. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a team-high 11 digs but it wasn't enough as the American Eagles hit .385 on their way to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-23) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at Bender Arena. Stony Brook returns to action on Saturday, taking on Brown in its home-opener after playing its first 14 games matches away from Pritchard Gymnasium.

American (10-2) jumped to a 14-7 lead in the opening set before the Seawolves (4-10) scored eight of the next 12 points to close within 18-15. The Eagles eventually pushed their advantage back to five but Stony Brook cut the lead to 24-22 on a kill from freshman Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.). But following am American timeout, Krysta Cicala set up Juliana Crum for a kill to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles again surged in front in the second set, grabbing a 14-7 lead. Stony Brook scored the next two points on a kill and an ace from senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) but the Eagles answered with a 9-2 spurt to put the set away.

It looked as if the Eagles would coast to victory in the third set, going in front 21-13. But Stony Brook scored 10 of the next 13 points to climb within one at 24-23. But American once again had an answer, getting a kill from Angelina Waterman to close out the set and the match.

Waterman led the Eagles with 15 kills while Magdalena Tekiel added 13. Freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) tallied a team-high eight digs for the Seawolves, who hit .333 in the opening set.
