Swimming and diving topped by Grand Canyon University

Phoenix, Ariz. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams came up short on Saturday against Division II Grand Canyon University as the men's squad fell by a score of 139-65, while the women were downed by a count of 139.5-64.5 at the Brophy Sports Campus.

The women's 400 medley relay team of freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba), junior Taylor Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.), sophomore Julie Policht (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) opened the competition with a victory in 4:04.56. Junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) then continued the team's early success with a second-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle, touching in 18:00.95.

Sophomore Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia) placed third in the 200 free, while freshman Keara Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.) also took third in the 50 free. Policht then turned in another solid performance in the 200 fly, touching second in 2:13.98. Junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) finished a spot behind Policht in third and junior Mallory Breen (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) took fifth to give Stony Brook three swimmers in the top five of the 200 fly.

In the 100 free, junior Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, Ill.) registered a time of 55.89 to place third, while sophomore Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama) recorded a mark of 2:15.42 in the 200 backstroke to take second. In addition, senior Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia) was Stony Brook's top finisher in the 200 breaststroke, placing second in 2:32.11. The women's 400 free relay team closed out the day with a second-place finish as Heuser, Stranc, sophomore MaryKate Morcerf (Babylon, N.Y.) and Zelnick touched in 3:43.00.

On the men's side, senior Nathan Fleshman (Monroe, Mich.) captured first in the 1,650 free with a time of 17:38.74. Junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) also earned a victory in the 200 free, cruising to first place in 1:46.93. In the 50 free, senior Christopher Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.) was Stony Brook's top finisher, taking third, while senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) paced the Seawolves in the 200 fly with a second-place finish.

Freshman Sean Hardick (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded a third-place standing in the 200 backstroke to lead three Stony Brook swimmers in the event. Fleshman then turned in another strong performance in the 500 free, finishing second in 5:05.93. Senior Sean Clarke (Bellmore, N.Y.) and junior Zackery Good (Columbus, Ind.) placed third and fourth, respectively.

In the men's 200 backstroke, sophomore Hajime Ichikawa (Scarsdale, N.Y.) fared well with a second-place finish in 2:21.21 and the men's 400 free relay team closed out the day on a high-note as Conway, Olwell, junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.) and freshman Zachary Auclair (Tolland, Conn.) placed second in 3:21.43.

The Seawolves return to the pool on Wednesday when they host Lafayette at 3 p.m.
