Swimming and diving battles Binghamton on senior day

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams battled America East rival Binghamton on Saturday at University Pool as the women's squad tied 150-150, while the men's team fell 163-124 in the final dual meet of the season.

Three season-best times were established on Saturday, beginning with freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba) in the 1,000 freestyle. Deschenes smashed the previous season-best time of 10:46.92 in the event, touching second in 10:38.44. Junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) then recorded a second season-best in the 1,000 freestyle when he touched second in 10:16.45. The third season record fell when senior Megan Furrer (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded a score of 204.67 in the three-meter diving competition to place second overall. Deschenes was also victorious in two other individual events, touching first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke competitions.

Stony Brook opened the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of sophomore Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama), freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia), junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) coasted to a win in 1:50.09. Reid then grabbed three more first-place finishes on the day, pacing the pack in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.19), 200 breaststroke (2:28.96) and 200 IM (2:12.56).

The Seawolves also received solid performances from juniors Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) and Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.). Heuser was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:55.51), while Conway took home victories in the 100 freestyle (46.71) and 50 freestyle (22.09).

Other winners on the day included senior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) in the 200 free (1:44.85), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.88), senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) in the 200 butterfly (2:00.76) and the men's 400 freestyle relay quartet of Conway, senior Christopher Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.), junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.) and Ochmanski.

Prior to the meet, Stony Brook honored the 10 seniors that competed in their final home contest: Sean Clarke (Bellmore, N.Y.), Gal Eldor (South Setauket, N.Y.), Nathan Fleshman (Monroe, Mich.), Max Kammerman (Binghamton, N.Y.), Adrienne Policht (Toronto, Ontario), Anastasia Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia), Furrer, McCort, Ochmanski and Olwell.

Stony Brook returns to the pool for its final meet of the 2010-11 season at the America East Championships in Boyds, Md. on Feb. 17-20.
