West Point, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving team opened the season on Friday at Army and received several strong performances from newcomers. Freshman Elizabeth Beckett (Swindon, England) placed first in the 200 breast, while junior transfer Jodie Darnell (Rocklin, Calif.) took first in the three-meter dive.
As a team, the Seawolves placed third out of three teams on the men's side and fourth out of four teams on the women's side. The men's squad fell to Army, 190-98, and Boston College, 210-90. The women fell to Vermont, 202-98, dropped a 194-106 decision to Army, and lost a tightly-contested battle to Boston College, 158-142.
Beckett, swimming in her first collegiate race, thwarted the pack in the 200 breaststroke with a first-place time of 2:26.87. The freshman also touched third in the 100 breastroke (1:09.64) and helped the 200 medley relay team place third in 1:50.92.
Darnell, along with sophomore Serra Czapla (Glastonbury, Conn.), helped Stony Brook take the top two spots in the three-meter dive. Darnell topped the competition with 204.20 points, while Czapla earned second with 190.85. Czapla was also second in the one-meter dive with a score of 185.90.
Sophomore Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) accounted for Stony Brook's only other top finish of the day as she touched first in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 54.16.
On the men's side, senior captain Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) turned in an impressive day with a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 free (21.81) and 200 free (1:45.37). Conway also took third in the 100 free with a time of 47.91, just .32 seconds behind first-place finisher Bill McCarty of Army.
Two newcomers also bolstered the performance of the men's team as freshman Matthew Essig (Arlington, Va.) placed third in the 500 free and freshman Kyle Gannon (North Babylon, N.Y.) battled to third in the three-meter dive with a score of 204.05, a total higher than any three-meter score for Stony Brook last season.
The Seawolves will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they welcome St. Francis (N.Y.) to University Pool for a 1 p.m. meet.
