Stony Brook University's men's tennis team won five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 victory over the Army Black Knights at the Lichtenburg Tennis Center on Friday. Stony Brook improves to 1-1 with the win.
Stony Brook opened the match by earning the doubles points. Freshman Nikita Fomin and sophomore Roope Kailaheimo (Helsinki, Finland) won 9-7 at No. 1 and junior Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Mehmet Duru (Istanbul, Turkey) won 8-6 at No. 2.
The Seawolves then dominated in singles play, winning four matches in straight sets. Freshman Francesco Arciuli (Lesmo, Italy) won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 and freshman Ryan Schmitz (Schenectady, N.Y.) coasted to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Wong dropped just five games on his way to victory at No. 4 while senior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Fomin led 2-1 in the third set before Asika Isoh had to withdraw due to injury.
