Boyds, Md. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams wrapped up day one at the America East Championship on Thursday at the Germantown Aquatic Center and currently stand in fifth place after five events. The women's squad trails first-place New Hampshire by 24 points, while the men currently sit 54 points off the pace set by host UMBC.
The Seawolves set a new program record in the 200 medley relay as freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba), freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia), junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) placed fourth in 1:44.17.
Meanwhile, in the men's 200 medley relay, the quartet of junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) and junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) set a new season-best time of 1:35.89.
In the 800 freestyle relay, the quartet of Deschenes, Zelnick, sophomore Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia) and junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) set a new season-best time of 7:36.26 to place sixth. The time was less than a second off the program record (7:35.85) for the event set in 2009.
The men's 800 free relay team also set a new season-best time as the quartet of Conway, junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.), junior Zackery Good (Columbus, Ind.) and senior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) took fourth in 6:58.83.
Action continues on Friday starting at 10 a.m. with preliminary heats in the 500 freestyle.
