April 17, 2011

Box Score

West Hartford, Conn. - The Stony Brook softball team outhit Hartford, 8-4, and scored the final three runs of the game, but could not climb out of a four-run hole on Sunday in a 4-3 defeat to the Hawks. Freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI at the plate.

The Hawks (5-26, 2-7 America East) struck with four runs in the first inning on four hits off Stony Brook starter Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.). Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) came on in relief with only one out in the first and gave up a single before setting down 16 conseuctive batters as the Hawks failed to get a single baserunner after the first inning.

The hosts' 4-0 cushion proved to be enough, however, as the Seawolves (13-21, 3-9 America East) could not quite climb out of the hole. A double steal accounted for Stony Brook's first run in the second as freshman Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) crossed home as Fortier attempted to swipe second. The Seawolves then added a run in the fourth when Fortier singled in junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.), who led off with a double.

In the seventh, Fortier launched a solo home run, her third of the year, to cut the score to 4-3, but the Seawolves could not bring another run in, stranding runners at first and second to end the game.

Stony Brook will have a busy week ahead with six non-conference games on the schedule. On Tuesday, the Seawolves will travel to Rutgers for a pair of games starting at 3 p.m., before returning home to host Iona in a make-up doubleheader on Thursday at noon. Stony Brook will close out the week on Easter Sunday at Rider at 1 p.m.
