Five Stony Brook student-athletes have been announced as winners of the 2010-11 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award, State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher announced on Monday. Among the Seawolves honorees are Michael Coulter (Yorba Linda, Calif.) of the football team, Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) of the men's lacrosse team, Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) of the baseball team, Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) of the women's cross country team and Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) of the women's track & field team.
The State University of New York's Chancellor Awards recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels. Scholar athletes are selected by SUNY System Administration in consultation with the campus athletic directors at each level of play. In honor of the accomplishment, each award recipient will receive a congratulatory letter and a plaque from Chancellor Zimpher.
“This year’s 74 SUNY scholar-athletes have accomplished a great feat, excelling in our classrooms as well as our athletic programs,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “With an average GPA of 3.64 and a number of championship competitions among them, the achievements of our scholar-athletes are cause for cheer. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”
Coulter is the starting quarterback for a Seawolves football program that has won back-to-back Big South championships. The 6'1, 210-pound California native threw for more than 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2010 and finished in the top five in the league in all passing statistics. Even more impressive off the field, Coulter is a Biochemistry major, was named to the Big South All-Academic team and was named the 2010 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Coulter has 3,871 passing yards and 32 touchdowns in his two-year Stony Brook career.
Crowley is one of Stony Brook's most decorated lacrosse players of all-time. The 6'4, 200-pound midfielder is averaging 4.0 points per game, sixth-best in the country, and leads America East in assists and points. He was named first-team All-America East this week and is a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, given to college lacrosse's top player, and the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, given to nation's top senior student-athlete across nine different sports. Crowley is Stony Brook's all-time leader in points (224) and has been named All-America East four times and All-American in 2010. Crowley is a three-time All-Academic team pick and was America East's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010.
Johnson, a 6'0 junior, is enjoying a terrific season as a starting pitcher on a Stony Brook's baseball team that is enjoying its best-ever Division I year. The team is currently 30-10, and Johnson, who serves as the team's No. 2 starting pitcher, is 7-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 56-2/3 innings. Johnson ranks second in America East in wins, third in ERA, tied for first in shutouts (2), tied for sixth in strikeouts and third in opponents batting average (.230). Johnson is already a two-time All-America East selection and was also America East's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in baseball in 2010.
Holly Van Dalen helped lead the Seawolves women's cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championship after posting a seventh-place run in the race, good enough to earn All-America honors. She also helped the Seawolves win their fourth consecutive America East Championship with a second-place finish. Including her work as a track & field athlete, Van Dalen has been named All-American twice, All-America East seven times and was the Northeast Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2010. She also has won multiple academic awards, including America East All-Academic honors and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
Lucy Van Dalen has had a banner 2010-11 athletic season, earning All-America, Northeast Region Athlete of the Year and All-America East honors in cross country and track & field. Winning the SUNY Award in track & field, Van Dalen posted the nation's best time in the mile at the Last Chance Meet at the Armory back in February, was named the America East Track Athlete of the Year after breaking the conference's 16-year record in the mile and finished third in the 3000 at the NCAA Championship to earn All-America accolades. In her career, Van Dalen has been named All-American three times, All-America East eight times and Northeast Region Athlete of the Year three times. She has also earned numerous academic honors, including America East All-Academic honors and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
