Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) totaled a match-high 18 kills but the Albany Great Danes hit .333 on their way to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-11) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Nelson had an attack percentage of .350 for the Seawolves, who had their four-match winning streak snapped. Freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 13 digs.
SBU (7-8, 1-1 AE) came out hot at the start, scoring nine of the first 12 points of the match. But Albany (8-7, 2-0 AE) slowly crept back into the set, taking its first lead at 14-13 on a kill from Casey Wright.
Stony Brook tied it at 16 on a Nelson kill but Albany scored the next three points to a take a three-point lead. A kill from Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.) ended the run but the Great Danes ended the set on a 6-2 spurt to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was close early as the set was tied at 10 following a Brooke Stanley service error. Albany scored eight of the next 12 points though to take an 18-14 lead.
SBU rallied back, closing within a point on three occasions. But, with the Seawolves trailing 22-21, the Great Danes scored three straight points, two on kills from Wright, to take a 2-0 lead.
Albany controlled the third set right from the start, grabbing a 15-3 advantage. Stony Brook got no closer than nine the rest of the way as the Great Danes completed the sweep.
Wright led Albany with 16 kills on a .652 hitting percentage. Laurie Gonzalez recorded a match-high 15 digs for the Great Danes, who hit .375 in the final set.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, hosting Binghamton at Pritchard Gymnasium. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
