Jan. 25, 2012

Final Stats

West Hartford, Conn. - Senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) led the Stony Brook women's basketball team with 12 points but the Hartford Hawks shot 48 percent on their way to a 63-44 victory over the Seawolves on Wednesday night at Chase Arena.

"I'm really happy with the way we competed for 40 minutes even after falling behind," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said. "But we just dug ourselves too big a hole in the first half."

Senior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) added nine points and five rebounds for the Seawolves, who shot 42 percent and out-scored the Hawks 24-18 in the paint. Ruthanne Doherty led three Hartford players in double-figures with 14 points.

Stony Brook (4-17, 1-7) led 11-9 in the early going, hitting five of its first nine shots. Hartford (12-10, 3-5 AE) answered with 9-2 run to take a five-point lead before Davis knocked down a jumper to bring SBU within 18-15 with seven minutes to go until halftime.

But the Hawks scored 16 of the final 20 points of the half to take a 34-19 lead into the break. Hartford shot 52 percent in the opening 20 minutes while Davis led Stony Brook with six points.

Hartford scored the first four points of the second half to push its lead to 19 before junior Jessica Previlon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored two straight hoops to chop the SBU deficit back to 15.

The Hawks pushed their lead to 20 on a jumper from Alyssa Englert but junior Taylor Burner (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored the next four points and Jacobs followed with a jumper as SBU got within 47-33 with 11 minutes left.

Daphne Elliot answered with a three for Hartford though and Milana Gilbert then scored on a driving lay-up to push the Hawks lead to 19. The Seawolves did not go away, getting within 52-39 on a jumper from senior Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) with five minutes left.

But Doherty scored on a put-back hoop and Elliot followed with a three to put the game away for the Hawks.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting Vermont at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
