Freshman Melissa Rigo (East Northport, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 16 kills but it wasn't enough as the American Eagles swept the Stony Brook University volleyball team (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) on Friday at the Yale Classic.
The Numbers Game
• Rigo has led the team in kills in all four matches
• It was the second straight loss for the Seawolves, who fell to 1-3
• Sophomore Nicole Parkas totaled a career-high 11 digs
• Freshman setter Nicole Vogel tallied 27 assists to go along with eight digs
Key Moments
• Stony Brook trailed 21-19 in the opening set following an American attack error but the Eagles scored the next four points to take the set
• The Seawolves led 11-7 early in the second set following a kill from sophomore Evann Slaughter
• American rallied and led by as many as five but SB cut the lead to 24-22 on another kill from Slaughter before a block gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead
• The third set was also close early as a kill from junior Kaitlin Costello gave SB a 10-9 lead but the Eagles scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a 20-14 lead
• Four straight Stony Brook points cut the American lead to 21-19 but American again had an answer, scoring four of the next five points to take the set and complete the sweep
