Stony Brook falls at No. 5 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Despite a pair of rushing touchdowns from QB Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.), Stony Brook fell to fifth-ranked James Madison 38-20 in a CAA Football game on Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Carbone finished the game with 132 yards passing and 41 yards rushing to go with the redshirt freshman's two scores for the Seawolves (2-2, 1-2 CAA). Junior WR Steve Mario (Franklin Square, N.Y.) also scored his first career touchdown on a 18-yard pass from senior QB Conor Bednarski (South Pasadena, Calif.).

The Dukes (5-0, 2-0 CAA) who gained 392 yards in the first half, were held to just 137 yards by the Stony Brook defense in the final two quarters. Sophmore DB Tyrice Beverette (Lakewood, N.J.) led the Seawolves defense with a career-best 14 tackles and a forced fumble.

"First obviously, congratulations to JMU. They are a good football and they certainly played well. As far as our performance, once we settled down we competed well. If we would have stayed away from some of the short field and mistakes that we made, it could have been a little different game in the fourth quarter. I'm proud of our effort."

Scoring
- JMU scored first when RB Khalid Abdullah carried it in the end zone from 16 yards out. Tyler Gray's PAT was good.
- The Dukes added to the lead when QB Vad Lee scampered nine yards into the end zone to cap a nine-play, 90-yard drive with 5:19 left in the first quarter. Gray's PAT was good.
- JMU added another touchdown on the ground when Cardon Johnson snuck in from one yard out just before the end of the first quarter. Gray's PAT was good.
- Stony Brook answered with a two-play, 88-yard drive when QB Conor Bednarski found WR Steve Marino in the end zone from 18 yards out. Przemyslaw Popek's PAT was good.
- JMU increased the lead back to 21 when Abdullah capped an 11-play, 88-yard drive with a one-yard run. Gray's PAT made the score 28-7.
- The Dukes opened the second half with a 30-yard pass from Lee to Ishmael Hyman. Ryan Maglio's PAT was good.
- JMU's PK Ryan Maglio knocked in a 21-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
- Stony Brook's QB Joe Carbone rushed around the left side for a one-yard rush to cap an 18-play, 70-yard drive. Popek's PAY was good.
- Carbone scored for the second time of the game on the ground with a three-yard rush to cap at 14-play, 86-yard drive late in the game. The two-point conversion failed.

Notes
- WR Steve Marino pulled down an 18-yard touchdown pass from QB Conor Bednarski at the end of the first quarter. The touchdown was the first in Marino's career.
- Marino pulled down a career-best four receptions for a career-high 41 yards.
- TE Cal Daniels and Bednarski connected for a 70-yard pass in the first quarter. The play is the longest of the season for Stony Brook.
- DB Tyrice Beverette collected a career-best 14 tackles against JMU. He also had a career-high nine solo stops.
- QB Joe Carbone scored his third rushing touchdown of the season with his one-yard TD in the fourth quarter. He then added his fourth of the season later in the quarter, marking his second multi-touchdown game of his career.
