Stony Brook claims The Golden Apple with win over UAlbany

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook football closed out the 2015 season with a three-game winning streak after Saturday afternoon's 20-2 victory over UAlbany in a CAA Football game at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves also claimed The Golden Apple trophy for winning the Empire Clash.

Stony Brook's (5-5, 3-5 CAA Football) defense held the Great Danes (3-8, 2-6 CAA Football) out of the end zone and to just 160 yards of total offense, including 78 rushing. The Seawolves defense also recorded five sacks and seven more tackles for loss. Senior DE Victor Ochi (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a pair of sacks in increase his career lead at SBU, while junior DL Aaron Thompson (Deer Park, N.Y.) had three sacks.

Offensively for the Seawolves, RB Donald Liotine (Medford, N.Y.) rushed for 203 yards and one touchdown, while WR Ray Bolden (Euless, Texas) pulled down 11 receptions for 112 yard and one score. QB Conor Bednarski (South Pasadena, Calif.) completed 18 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Scoring
- Stony Brook opened the scoring with a three-yard pass from QB Conor Bednarski to WR Ray Bolden in the first quarter. PK Przemyslaw Popek's PAT was good. The drive went 11 plays for 67 yards.

- Popek extended Stony Brook's lead to 10-0 with a 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter. The drive was five plays for 21 yards.
- Popek gave the Seawolves a 13-0 lead with seconds remaining in the first half with an 18-yard field goal that capped a 10-play, 57-yard drive.
- RB Donald Liotine opened the second half scoring with a six-yard rush that capped a two-play, 25-yard drive after Albany's muffed kickoff. Popek's PAT was good.
- UAlbany cracked the scoreboard with a safety. DaSharnte Thompson tackled Donald Liotine in the end zone with 6:04 left in the third quarter.

"It was a good win for the program. The run game is going to carry you, but an efficient passing game helps and Conor (Bednarski) had a great game today. Our coordinator put a great plan together and we efficiently moved the ball well. Once again, out defense is the reason why we are going to be successful. We believe in that and they really played well."

- DE Victor Ochi recorded 2.0 sacks in today's game against Albany to move his career total to 32.5 and extend his career lead at SBU.

- Ochi's sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss give him 49.0 TFLs to extend his career-best at SBU.
- Ochi recorded 2.0 sacks in today's game to bring his season total to 13.0. His 13.0 are the second most on the SBU single season list.
- WR Ray Bolden pulled down 11 receptions in today's game to bring his season total to 68. His 68 are the third most in a single season in Stony Brook history.
- Bolden's 11 receptions in today's game are a career-high for the sophomore transfer. His previous high was nine against both Maine and Elon.
- Bolden also recorded 112 yards receiving, marking his third 100-plus receiving game of the season and his career.
- RB Donald Liotine rushed for over 100 yards for the third straight game and the third time of his career with 31 carries and 203 yards. The 203 yards in one shy of his career high and marks the second 200-plus game of his career.
- DB Chris Cooper pulled down a pair of interceptions in today's game vs. Albany. They were the sophomore transfers' first career INTs.
- DL Aaron Thompson collected 3.0 sacks in today's game moving his season total to 8.5 and into the top 10 on SBU's single-season sacks list.
- With the win Stony Brook is now 7-10 against Albany is the series.
- The Seawolves claimed The Golden Apple with the win over Albany.
- The win moved SBU's record to 5-5, marking the first .500 or better season since 2012's 10-3 record.
- Stony Brook honored the 13 senior members of the football team prior to kickoff. The class includes DL Dante Allen, QBConor Bednarski, LB Trokon-Rahim Cassell II, S Naim Cheeseboro, WR Angelo DeShields, DB Marquise Dixon, QB Carlos Hernandez, C Jerry Hubshman, OL Dylan Joslin, FB Chris Makulik, OL Karim Mohamed, DL Victor Ochi and LB Julian Quintin.
