Stony Brook falls at Notre Dame

South Bend, Ind. - Despite 17 points from senior Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.), the Stony Brook men's basketball team fell to Notre Dame, 86-61, Tuesday night at the Purcell Pavilion.

Senior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and senior Rayshaun McGrew (Chicago, Ill.) added 12 points.

Warney, who added four blocks, became the second player in Stony Brook (4-3) history with 1,000 rebounds with his third rebound of the night.

Zach Auguste led five players in double figures for Notre Dame (6-2) with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

We're a very good rebounding team and Notre Dame did a great job of keeping us off the glass. I thought Tre [Carson Puriefoy] did a great job of keeping [Demetrius] Jackson out of the lane, but he's a very good player and showed that tonight.

I just missed some shots I usually make. They threw a couple of guys at me at times. It was just not making shots I usually make.

Turning Point
Despite an 11-point deficit, 24-13, with 12:04 left in the first half, Stony Brook used a 12-2 run to get within one after Warney's free throw with 7:21 in the half.

Stony Brook trailed by as few as four points in the second half, 44-40 and 46-42. But Notre Dame answered with a 12-2 spurt, taking its biggest lead of the game, 58-44, with under 11 minutes to play in regulation.

• Puriefoy led all scorers with 13 first-half points.
• Junior Ahmad Walker (Port Washington, N.Y.) had at least five assists for the fifth time in seven games this season, finishing with seven.
• The Seawolves shot 25 of 62 (.403) from the field. Notre Dame was 33 of 60 (.550).
• Stony Brook forced 11 Notre Dame turnovers.
