STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook football clicked on all cylinders during Saturday night's season opener at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in the 38-9 victory over visiting Central Connecticut State.
The Seawolves gained 475 yards of total offense led by a running attack that rattled off 345 of those yards. SBU's defense held CCSU to just 120 total yards of offense and just 69 yards after the Blue Devils' 51-yard touchdown pass on the first possession.
Junior RB Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and freshman RB Isaiah White (Medford, N.Y.) led the ground game. Bedell carried the ball 22 times for 133 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, while White had 17 carries for 103 yards. Redshirt freshman QB Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) added two rushing touchdowns in the victory.
Defensively, senior DB Naim Cheeseboro (King of Prussia, Pa.) led the Seawolves with five tackles, while senior LB Julian Quintin (East Brunswick, N.J.) added his second career interception.
Quoting the Seawolves
Head coach Chuck Priore
"We ran a lot of plays and played great defense so we controlled the game for the most part. We had a couple mishaps at the end of the first quarter and in the middle of the second quarter. A couple of penalties offensively, but I think they only ran 16 offensive plays in the first half so we had control of the game. I really liked our intensity of how we played throughout the game."
RB Stacey Bedell
"The game being cut short last week just made us more hungry to come out here today and play this game. We lived up to the test. Everybody played well."
"The offensive line did a great job tonight. They worked very hard during the offseason. They have been practicing hard and did everything they were supposed to do to open up holes for me."
QB Joe Carbone
"I was ready to play. Coach told me at halftime that I would be starting the second half so I came out ready to go."
LB Julian Quintin
"During the interception a lot of the young kids were saying that I was old and that was why I got caught from behind. When the play was happening all I had to do was do my job and that is what the coaches stress to us."
