Stony Brook falls at New Hampshire



DURHAM, N.H. – Stony Brook fell from the ranks of the unbeatens in CAA Football play on Saturday afternoon with a 43-14 loss at New Hampshire at Wildcat Stadium.
 
The Seawolves (5-3, 4-1 CAA Football) entered Saturday tied with James Madison atop the conference standing with perfect records. Stony Brook is now tied with Richmond and Villanova for third, percentage points behind UNH (6-3, 5-1 CAA Football).
 
Scoring
  • UNH scored on the opening drive of the game on nine-yard a pass from QB Trevor Knight to RB Daulton Crossan. The score capped a 10-play, 59-yard drive. Morgan Ellman's PAT was good.
  • The Wildcats added to the early lead with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown by DB Prince Smith. The two-point conversion pass from Adam Riese to Kyle Reisert was good.
  • Stony Brook got on the board with a nine-yard touchdown pass from QB Joe Carbone to WR Steve Marino. The score capped an 11-play, 61-yard drive in the first quarter. Przemyslaw Popek's PAT was good.
  • UNH capitalized on a turnover when the Wildcats QB Trevor Knight found WR Neil O'Connor in the end zone from 18 yards out on the first play after an interception. Morgan Ellman's PAT was good.
  • The Wildcats added another touchdown with a one-yard run by QB Trevor Knight to cap an eight-play, 36-yard drive that began with an interception. The PAT by Morgan Ellman was good.
  • Stony Brook got back on the board when QB Joe Carbone found WR Tim Keith for a 3 yard passing touchdown that capped a six-play, 59-yard drive. Przemyslaw Popek's PAT was good.
  • UNH didn't waste any time to get in the endzone following Stony Brook's score when QB Trevor Knight found WR Malik Love from six-yard out. That score came after a kickoff return to the Seawolves' six-yard line. Mogan Ellman's PAT was good.
  • RB Daulton Crossan completed the scoring with a 14-yard run late in the fourth quarter. The score capped a four-play, 37-yard drive. The PAT by Mogan Ellman was good.
The Numbers
  • Stony Brook gained 268 yards of total offense on 75 plays. New Hampshire had 219 yards of total offense on 60 plays.
  • Stony Brook turned the ball over five times, while UNH had one turnover.
  • RB Jordan Gowins led Stony Brook with 30 rushing yards on 12 carries.
  • QB Joe Carbone was 19-of-31 for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
  • WR Tim Keith led the receivers with five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.
  • Punter Marc Nolan averaged 42.5 yards on eight punts, including a 53-yard kick.
  • DB Tyrice Beverette and DB Jaheem Wood each had five tackles on defense. Both also recorded a sack.

"Congratulation to New Hampshire and coach McDonnell. Their program did a great job today and certainly took advantage of the opportunities presented to them and that's what good football teams do. They are a good football team."
 
"Turnovers led to flipping the field position and the score. That's what the game is about and when you are playing good team versus good team those are going to be the differences."
 
Notes
  • QB Joe Carbone's two passing touchdown in today's game marks his career-high for passing scores in a game.  
  • Carbone also set career-highs in completions with 19 and tied his mark for yards with 165.
  • Graduate WR Tim Keith pulled down his first collegiate touchdown with a 38-yard reception from QB Joe Carbone in the third quarter.
  • Keith's five catches for 82 yards are both career-highs for the graduate student.
  • Senior WR Steve Marino's first quarter touchdown was the second receiving score of his career. He also hauled in a score last season at James Madison.
  • Freshman DL Sam Kamara made his first career start in today's game. He is the first true freshman to start a game for Stony Brook this season.
  • Captains for today's game were WR Tim Keith, RB Stacey Bedell, DB Tyrice Beverette and DB Jaheem Woods.
