Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team (8-5-3, 3-2-1 AE) enters its regular-season finale vs. UMBC (5-8-3, 0-6 AE) with the hopes of clinching one of the top two seeds in the America East Playoffs. The Seawolves and Retrievers are set to kickoff on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m.
Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers were eliminated from postseason play after their 3-0 loss to Vermont last time out. Although the Retrievers are 0-6 in America East action, they still possess a lot of young talent and are a dangerous team as evident by their 5-2-3 record out of league play. UMBC has yet to score a goal in its six conference matches, which is puzzling considering it scored 16 goals in 10 non-league matches. Tre Pulliam leads the Retrievers with four goals and an assist. Sammy Kahsai and Christian Morales each have three goals.
Senior Day
Stony Brook will honor seniors Kofi Ramirez Osei-Tutu (Trondheim, Norway), Tavares Thompson (Kingston, Jamaica) and Eduardo Valle (Miami, Fla.) on Wednesday night. All three players have been steady contributors for the Seawolves over their four-year careers. Valle has enjoyed a breakout season with a career-high four goals in 2016, while Thompson has led the back four to six clean sheets from his center back position. Osei-Tutu has battled injuries his senior year but has played in 51 career matches, starting 49.
Playoff Scenario
The math is simple for Stony Brook: win and clinch a spot in the America East Semifinals via a top two seed. A tie would likely lead to a home quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 5, while a loss would leave its fate up in the air as to whether or not it gets a home playoff match. The Seawolves can finish no lower than the No. 5 seed.
