Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook falls to Loyola, 71-70

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – It was another heartbreaker at home as a last-second shot decided the fate for the Stony Brook men's basketball team. The Seawolves fell to Loyola 71-70 on a layup at the buzzer in Island Federal Credit Union Arena Wednesday night. Stony Brook drops to 1-5 on the year, while the Greyhounds move to 3-4.

Boals' Reaction
"That's a tough way to lose," head coach Jeff Boals said after the game. "Give credit to Andre Walker, he made a big-time play. We knew what they were going to do, but he made a great shot at the end of the game.
"I thought we got out to a decent start. We got down 29-20 late in the first half but did a great job of closing. We made shots, executed and went into halftime with a two-point lead. The second half was back-and-forth. It was disappointing that they scored three-straight times, we knew exactly what they were going to do. But they made three good plays at the end of the game."

Highlights
  • After trailing for much of the first half, the Seawolves closed out the opening period very strong, putting together a 13-0 run to regain their early, taking a 35-33 advantage into the halftime break.
  • Stony Brook did not miss a free throw in the first half as senior Lucas Woodhouse (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and junior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) each went 4-for-4 from the line.
  • Stony Brook carried the momentum into the second half, extending its lead to seven on three occasions.
  • A drought for the Seawolves that saw Loyola score seven-straight points of its own, allowed the Greyhounds back in it.
  • The game saw five ties over a five-minute span late in the second half, but Stony Brook did not give up it's lead until Loyola's Chancellor Barnard hit a jumper to break the 62-all tie with 2:04 to play.
  • The final two minutes saw six of the game's nine lead changes. Senior Kameron Mitchell (Jacksonville, Fla.) drove the lane with seven seconds on the clock and was fouled. He hit both free throws to put the Seawolves up 70-69, but Loyola's Andre Walker went straight to the basket off the inbound and was able to get one to fall as the clock ran out.

Notes
  • Sturdivant has scored in double figures in five of the team's six games this season, while Woodhouse made it back-to-back games in double-digits for the first time this season.
  • Woodhouse had four-or-more assists for the fifth time this season.
  • The Seawolves shot a season-best 81.0-percent from the free throw line.
