Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook stumbles at Hofstra, 96-58

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team was unable to get things going against Hofstra Tuesday night, falling 96-58 at the Mack Sports Complex. The Seawolves fall 3-7 on the year, while Hofstra moves to 7-5.

Boals' Reaction
"Hats off to Coach Mihalich and Hofstra, I thought they played a complete 40-minute game," said head coach Jeff Boals. "We didn't put up a lot of resistance for them. We knew coming off their loss to Kentucky they would be ready to play. Getting off to a great start was a huge key for us, to try and get some confidence. We missed a couple layups early, missed a couple wide-open threes and gave up a few offensive rebounds. That really set the tone for the game. The biggest thing for us is that we are still a work in progress. We've been down in a lot of other games, but this is the first game all year that we didn't show the fight or the grit to compete and that was disappointing."

Highlights
  • Freshman Michael Almonacy (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the way for the Seawolves, putting up a season-best 15 points in his first game in double figures.
  • A steady push from Hofstra out of the gate helped the Pride establish a comfortable lead early and never looked back, leading by as many as 43 points in the game.
  • Almonacy saw nine of his points come in the first half, but Hofstra had an answer for everything the Seawolves did.
  • After leading Stony Brook in scoring in each of the last two games, the Seawolves were without redshirt freshman Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) for the final 8:10 of the game as he quickly picked up his final two fouls and finished with nine points.
  • Junior Jakub Petras (Rajek, Slovakia) led Stony Brook on the boards with a career-high seven in the game.

Notes
  • Senior Lucas Woodhouse scored in double figures for the sixth time this season.
  • Hofstra had six players, including all five starters, score in double figures.
  • Stony Brook limited itself to just six turnovers in the game, marking the fourth time this season that number has been kept in single digits.
