Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook tops Brown 92-89

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The Stony Brook men's basketball team never trailed in the second half and was able to hold on for a 92-89 win over Brown at Pizzitola Sports Center Saturday afternoon. It was a familiar scene for the Seawolves as the game came down to the final seconds, but they were able to close out non-conference play with a victory. Stony Brook moves to 5-8 on the year, while the Bears now sit at 9-5.

Boals' Reaction
"I told these guys before that this would be a fun game to play in," said head coach Jeff Boals after the win. "Just given the way they play with their offensive prowess and lack of defense, we knew we were going to get great looks and great shots and it was going to come down to who made the stop when they needed it and we got a big one there are the end."

Highlights
  • After a first half that saw seven ties and 12 lead changes, the Seawolves never lost their halftime lead. They strung together 12-straight points in the final minutes to position themselves for the lead at the break, despite six quick points from Brown in the final 35 seconds.
  • Stony Brook led by double figures nearing the midway point in the second half, but an 11-2 run by Brown tied things at 78 by the final media timeout of the game.
  • A three from senior Lucas Woodhouse (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and a steal turned transition layup out of the press for junior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) put the Seawolves back up five with 2:23 to play.
  • The difference remained at two possessions until Brown's Brandon Anderson hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds on the clock to get the Bears within one.
  • Junior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) sent the ball down the court to redshirt freshman Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), who threw down the wide-open opportunity and put the Seawolves back up five.
  • The Bears answered, but were forced to foul still down three. Senior Kameron Mitchell (Jacksonville, Fla.) went to the line twice in the final seconds, hitting 1-of-2 both times.
  • A last-second three from JR Hobbie was tipped by Woodhouse and fell short as the Seawolves were able to hold on for the win.
  • Foul trouble plagued the Seawolves all afternoon as Brown had 34 opportunities from the line, hitting 26 attempts.

Notes
  • Woodhouse led the way as his 27 points matched his career-best, which he set when he was at Longwood. He added five assist and did not turn the ball over.
  • Yeboah's late dunk made it a new career high for the newcomer with 20 points.
  • Stony Brook's 92 points is the most the team has scored since putting up 104 points in a win at Detroit on Nov. 24, 2012.
  • This is the third time this season the Seawolves have had four players score in double figures.
  • After beginning the year scoring in double figures in seven of the first eight games, Sturdivant returned to double figures for the first time in five games with 15 points against the Bears.
