Seawolves sign 6'3" center Ayshia Baker

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team has added junior college transfer Ayshia Baker for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Ayshia to our Stony Brook family," said Stony Brook head coach Caroline McCombs. "She is an outstanding young woman who has proven to us that she is willing to work hard in all that she does. Ayshia has some tremendous natural abilities on the court, but it's her will and her positive approach that will give her every opportunity to make great things happen as a Seawolf!"

Baker played one year at Florida State College at Jacksonville for head coach John McGraw and will have three years of remaining eligibility for the Seawolves. She is eligible to play immediately.

"First, I want to say I am extremely happy for Ayshia," said McGraw. "She's a high-character young woman with a strong work ethic and a good attitude. I thought she was the best prospect we had last year at FSCJ because of her size, long arms and athleticism. She's still raw in terms of skill development, but her upside is tremendous."

Baker, a 6-3 center, was named Team MVP at George Jenkins High School as a senior. Her length will be a commodity inside for the Seawolves as she averaged 4.2 rebounds per game and 1.1 blocks per game in her lone season at FSCJ.

"I chose to attend Stony Brook because it is an awesome environment," said Baker. The University and the community has so much to offer. "I'm excited to have fun working with the coaching staff and my future teammates. Overall, it's great opportunity and a blessing for my mother and I."
