Seawolves fall at No. 17 UConn, 4-1

Storrs, Conn. - A seven minute and fourteen second stretch late in the first half saw the the No. 17 UConn Huskies (6-2) score three times in a 4-1 victory over the Stony Brook women's soccer team (1-5-2) on Sunday.

Faherty's Reaction

"We started the game well and created a couple of clear chances, but we were not able to put them away," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "Goals change games, and UConn's first goal definitely changed the flow of today's game.

"We need to continue to get better on both ends of the field, Faherty continued. "I look forward to getting back on the field on Tuesday to prepare for our next match against Delaware on Friday."

Highlights 

  • The Seawolves started brightly against the Huskies and came within inches of taking the lead in the 7th minute. Senior Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) jumped on a loose ball in the box and set herself up with a good first touch, but her shot from six yards out hit the post.
  • Stony Brook played toe-to-toe with the Huskies for the first 30 minutes until Rachel Hill broke the tie with a powerful shot from the top of the 18 yard box.
  • Stephanie Ribeiro addeded goals in the 34th and 40th minutes, the latter a fantastic display of skill.
  • Senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.), who tied Hutchinson with a team-high two shots, had her best chance late in the first half, but her shot from 22 yards out was pushed wide by the Huskies' goalkeeper.
  • Annika Schmidt pushed the lead to 4-0 early in the second half with a header from a corner kick.
  • Senior Lindsay Hutchinson (Millersville, Pa.) got the Seawolves on the board in the 61st minute, rifling a left-footed shot from 25 yards out over the keeper and under the crossbar. Edwards picked up an assist on the play.
Notes
  • UConn finished the match with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 10-3 lead in shots on goal.
  • The Seawolves outshot the Huskies 7-5 in the second half. 
  • Sophomore Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Shannon Robinson (Stony Point, N.Y.) each played a half in goal.
  • Stony Brook were dangerous on the counter attack and finished with a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
