Stony Brook, N.Y. -Â The Stony Brook men' soccer team (1-2) created numerous scoring opportunities, but ultimately lacked poise in front of goal in a 3-0 defeat at Buffalo Friday morning.
Anatol's Reaction
"Simply put, finishing was the difference today," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "When you have as many clear-cut chances as we did and don't put them away you keep teams around. We got punished for it today."
Highlights
- Stony Brook nearly took the lead three minutes into the match when junior Barnabas Mako (Budapest, Hungary) picked out Eduardo Valle (Miami, Fla.) with a cross, but the senior sailed his header over the bar from six yards out.
- Valle had a second opportunity to put the Seawolves in front later in the half when junior Vince Erdei(Budapest, Hungary) found him with a cross, but his shot was saved.
- Rikard Lunqvist broke the scoreless tie with six minutes to play in the first half, cutting the ball past Mako and finishing with his left foot to the far post.
- The Bulls would add a second when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Russell Cicerone stepped up and converted the spot kick to goalkeeper Tom McMahon's (Nassau Bay, Texas) right.
- Stony Brook picked up the tempo facing the two goal deficit. Sophomore Steven Ghitis (Weston, Fla.) ripped a drive from 30 yards out that was turned aside by Buffalo keeper Joseph Kuta.Â
- Kuta made two huge saves in the 79th minute, stopping Erdei from in tight and then denying freshman Mark Irvine (Southampton, England) on the rebound.Â
- Braden Scales gave Buffalo a 3-0 lead in the 82nd minute.
- Stony Brook's final chance came off of some good individual play from Erdei. His shot was saved but the rebound found sophomoreSerge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) who lofted his shot high.Â
Notes
- Stony Brook spent large chunks of the 90 minutes in Buffalo's half, holding a 20-9 advantage in shots and 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.Â
- Gamwanya led the way with four shots while Valle added three.
- The Seawolves were issued three yellow cards.Â
