Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Taylor Powers

First half goal sinks Stony Brook at Brown, 1-0

Providence, R.I. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team (1-4-1), playing in its third game in five days, couldn't find an equalizer after allowing a 31st minute goal in a 1-0 defeat at Brown on Sunday.

Faherty's Reaction

"Simply put, today was not our day," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "When the big moments came, we did not make the necessary plays to put ourselves in position to win.

"Brown is a quality side that was able to convert on a restart, an area of the game we need to improve at both on and off the ball," Faherty continued. "After three games in five days, we will take a couple days off and then start preparing for Coulmbia."

Highlights

  • A stiff wind kept both attacks at bay early until Abby Carchio found the back of the net in the 31st minute, heading in a corner kick for the match's only goal.
  • Junior Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) nearly used the wind to her advantage late in the first half when her corner kick curved off the crossbar.
  • The Seawolves hit their second crossbar of the game in the 55th minute in what was easily their best chance of the match. JuniorManuela Corcho (Norwalk, Conn.) streaked down the right in transition and put a shot on target to the far post. The Brown goalkeeper spilled a rebound to senior Raven Edwards (West Orange. N.J.) who put the bouncing ball off the crossbar from five yards out.
  • Senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.) had Stony Brook's final scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute. She placed her spinning shot perfectly inside the far post, but it was  kept out by a fingertip save.
Notes
  • Brown finished with 11 shots to six for the Seawolves.
  • Four Brown shots wound up on frame compared to two for Stony Brook.
  • Wiggins and Corcho took a team-high two shots and one shot on goal.
  • The Seawolves have been shutout in four of six contests this season.
  • Sophomore Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) made three saves and has given up just one goal in 180 minutes of action this season.
