Stony Brook, N.Y. – A handful of career-best performances lifted the Stony Brook volleyball team to a four-set win over Iona (25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18) in the Seawolves' home opener Wednesday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 2-6 on the year, while the Gaels fall to 0-8.
Turning Point
The teams split the first two sets before Iona took a 5-4 lead early in the third. Stony Brook would pull away a couple times in the frame before collecting its final five points of the set via freshmen, as
LeAnne Sakowicz (Wauconda, Ill.) tallied two aces and
Jordan Gels (Lewis Center, Ohio) notched three kills to win the set.
By the Numbers
- Sophomore
McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with a match-high and season-high 14 kills.
- Freshman
Maria Poole (Stavanger, Norway), Gels and Sakowicz each chipped in 10, tying Poole's career-high and setting a new high mark for the latter two. Gels added eight digs, while Sakowicz contributed seven digs and three aces.
- Sophomore
Morgan Kath (Muskego, Wis.) racked up a career-high 49 assists in the win.
- Freshman
Kardasia Hitchcock (Alexander City, Ala.) recorded a team-high 12 digs.
- Stony Brook held Iona to a .194 hitting percentage while hitting .240.
- The Seawolves capitalized on nine Iona service errors in the match.
