Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook falls at Binghamton, 71-67

VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's basketball team took another one down to the final play, but was unable to finish as it fell to Binghamton, 71-67, at the Events Center Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves are now 5-1 in the America East and 10-9 on the season, while the Bearcats sit at 10-11 on the year and 1-5 in league play.

Boals' Reaction
"I give our guys credit, we came back from being down 13, took the lead back at the final media timeout, we battled," said head coach Jeff Boals. "Binghamton made some big plays and capitalized on our miscues. In the first half we had a lot of turnovers, which is uncharacteristic of this team, and they capitalized on that, but there is a lot we can learn from this one."

Highlights
  • Stony Brook controlled the momentum early on, leading for the majority of the first half, but a 9-2 run by Binghamton to close out the half gave the Bearcats the two-point edge at the break.
  • After trailing at the half, the Seawolves allowed the deficit to get to double figures early in the new period.
  • Redshirt freshman Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) started a 12-2 run midway through the second half that gave Stony Brook its first lead since there was 3:23 left in the first half. He added seven points in the scoring stint.
  • The Bearcats quickly took back the advantage, but back-to-back threes from junior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.)  and senior Lucas Woodhouse (Greenlawn, N.Y.) put the lead in Stony Brook's hands until the final two minutes of play.
  • A three from Sekunda with 49 seconds remaining put Stony Brook back on top, 67-65.
  • The Seawolves were called for a foul and Binghamton's Bobby Ahearn went 1-of-2 from the line, but the Bearcats got ahold of the loose rebound and Timmy Rose hit the team's seventh three of the second half to take back the lead with 20 seconds on the clock.
  • Stony Brook was unable to execute on its final play of the game as a three from the corner was denied.
  • Binghamton came alive from beyond the arc in the second half, hitting 7-of-14 after connecting on just 2-of-10 in the opening period.
Notes
  • This is the 10th time through 19 outings that the game has been decided in the final minute of play. The Seawolves are 5-5 in this situation.
  • Stony Brook shot 80-percent from the free throw line in the game, after not making a single trip to the charity stripe in the first half.
  • After committing eight turnovers in the first half, the Seawolves cleaned it up in the second to finish the game with 10, marking the 12th time this season they have kept the number at 10 or fewer.
