Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Francese scores in double overtime, leading Stony Brook past Hartford on Sunday

STONY BROOK, N.Y –  Freshman forward Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) buried a golden goal in double overtime, sending Stony Brook women's soccer past Hartford, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field. With the victory, the Seawolves move to 6-7-0 (2-1-0 AEC) in 2017.

Francese's goal came at 105:31, as she blasted a shot into the back of the net from the corner of the box to send the Seawolves home with a win.

Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"This is a big win for our team, our program, and school. In the previous 20 meetings, we had only won twice – it was something we discussed as a group quite a bit the last few days. I am very happy for our student-athletes, they want to raise the bar for this program, and today they were rewarded for their efforts. We will enjoy this win on the ferry home and then tomorrow turn our attention to a very good New Hampshire team."

Final: Stony Brook 0, Hartford 0
  • The goal is Francese's sixth of the season. All six of her goals have come in the last five games for Stony Brook, as the freshman ranks No. 2 in the conference in goals scored.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) made three saves in the victory, tallying her third career shutout in the process
  • Stony Brook tallied 17 total shots, and attempted nine corners. The Seawolves have outshot their opponent in six of their last eight contests.
