STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook volleyball team battled to the very end of the fourth set to knock off Iona, 3-1, at Pritchard Gymnasium Tuesday evening. It was the third match in five days for the Seawolves, who move to 12-7 on the season, while Iona now sits at 8-13 on the year.
Belzung's Reaction
"I was really impressed by our pins tonight, Iona did a really good job of shutting our middles down," said head coach
Kristin Belzung. "Our pins showed up and they executed through the splits and the seams that we were able to get for them. It was really fun to see Liz [Pulver] come off the bench for us, have an opportunity compete, and for her to have the success that she did tonight, I was really proud of her effort."
Set-By-Set
- Play was close to begin the match as neither team led by more than three points in the opening set. After trailing in the early going, Stony Brook broke a 20-20 tie on a kill from senior
Cydney Bowman (Lake Mary, Fla.) to position itself for victory. Iona did not go down easy and kept it within two until a kill from sophomore
Liz Pulver (Temecula, Calif.) sealed the 25-22 win.Â
- Iona controlled the momentum in the second set, forcing the Seawolves to play catch-up throughout. Stony Brook led briefly nearing the midway point in the set and kept it close to the end, but Iona evened the match with a 25-22 win.Â
- After back-and-forth play to start, Stony Brook used a 7-1 run in the third set to create some distance and go up 16-10. The Seawolves tallied four straight points to close out a 25-17 third-set win.Â
- The fourth set saw 15 ties and eight lead changes as the two teams battled it out late. Stony Brook broke a 19-all tie on a kill from junior McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.), which forced Iona to call its first timeout of the set. The Gaels committed back-to-back errors following the break in action and Iona burned its final timeout as it trailed 22-20. A service error by the Gaels made it 26-26 and a kill from Bowman gave Stony Brook a late edge and match point. The Seawolves were able to force Iona into another attacking error to take the match.Â
